The Validity of Trip Advisor to Restaurants or Customers

Having worked in the Catering Industry I often check out Trip advisor (More for humour than reality) While the concept is brilliant, in practice, it doesn't work! Everything depends not only on the honesty of the 'customer' but also the honour of the competition. I could open a restaurant tomorrow and be the No.1 Restaurant in my area (if i supplied the comments about it). The following day, the Caff' down the road might take offence and mention mice and poor service and salty food etc. The only way it can work is if the restaurants join a program and give an individual number on each receipt to enter - which won't happen. Ultimately people - I don't want you to stop posting on TA, no really I don't!! Just realise your input ISN'T making a difference (I might know a website that CAN btw) However I must thank you, after all in todays society there are only a few places you can get a good honest laugh!!!!! :-)

I think this depends on how you approach using TA. My partner and I use it regularly on holiday to find good places to eat. Generally a high rated restaurant with lots of positive comments is worth a visit. We don't bother with restaurants that have high ratings but a lack of comments, but would consider somewhere with a lower rating but a majority of positive comments. As BlueMoon says, interpretation is key...

We just booked a 3* Hotel in Barcelona for 4 nights. Trip advisor ranked it #10 out of 534 hotels in Barcelona. It will be interesting to see if this is accurate

We use trip regularly to find out about places before we visit. forgot to do it once recently and had a bad experience - looking on trip proved we would have avoided if we had investigated beforehand. but you do have to be careful in how you interpret the info because the system is somewhat flawed and open to abuse, trip advisor should make more effort to address the problems, but on the whole i think it is useful.

We recently stayed in a great small hotel in Scotland we got chatting to the owner who took over the hotel about a year ago and had renovated & improved the food with a new chef but Tripadvisor still rated the hotel based on the previous owner and have also refused to remove negative comments that relate to previous ownership. This is misleading and unfair if tripadvisor wants to offer a genuine service and cares about what is posted on its website it needs to address this problem
